Insights & Articles A Study of Our Vineyards
“The vision of the winemaker starts in the field.”
We have the great privilege of farming small select parcels across more than two dozen very special vineyard sites.
It takes time, working with a vineyard, to discover its defining characteristics. Then, it takes even longer to use the right winemaking techniques and sensitivity to highlight those features in the wine. A lightness of touch in our winemaking allows us to achieve a more complex, multi-dimensional, “effortless” quality in our wines.
Over two decades, we’ve gained access to some truly legendary sites. And we’ve achieved close personal relationships with our growers. Our shared respect for the land, our dedication to the work, and our mutual respect for each other, carry through to the final product. We work with good people and we’re going to make some amazing wines.
From first pruning through to the day of harvest, we’re out there farming the land in a way that draws out the singularity of each parcel. We minimize our footprint in the vineyard, stay very close to the “ingredients” and let the vineyards speak for themselves.

Insights & ArticlesOur 2024 Winter Release
Opening Tuesday, October 29, our Winter 2024 offering of our final tranche of single vineyard 2022 wines features four of our most distinctive and quintessential DuMOL bottlings. These are some of our most treasured wines that are grown in highest quality vineyard sites. As a group they’re a distillation of the DuMOL style: intensity and concentration allied to purity and elegance in its most crystalline form. These are some of the “wines of the vintage.”
We open with our twenty-first bottling from our old vine parcel at Hyde Vineyard. For me this is the Chardonnay of the vintage. From grape to bottle, the wine developed effortlessly. The hand of the winemaker is in the background – a sure sign that the grapes are among the finest on Planet Vine. Crystalline, mineral and vibrant, the wine will drink well young and age for a decade-plus. Spectacular quality that should not be missed.
Our Flax Estate produces a style of Pinot that’s a strong contrast to our coastal wines. Dark fruits, piercing intensity, mineral drive and structural finesse. This is a wine that will increase in complexity in bottle over the next fifteen years - if you have the patience - and can stand toe-to-toe on quality and style with any Pinot from anywhere. Our finest ever effort from this steep hillside vineyard overlooking the Russian River itself.
2022 is a superb vintage for Californian Syrah. Our 2022 Eddie’s Patch is beautifully aromatic and deeply intense in a cool climate style. There’s a “pinosity” to the wine in the way it unfurls in the glass – lifted aromatics, vibrant pure fruits then a long energetic finish. You can open this early for its extrovert power or cellar it for three to four years and watch the wine’s deep texture take hold as the mountain tannins soften. A recent 2001 bottle – utterly spectacular - showed how long this wine can deliver pleasure.
Our final single vineyard offering comes from the world class Meteor Vineyard in Napa’s coolest appellation of Coombsville. The wine has soaring aromatics, intense blue and black creamy fruits, and grand scale complexity. With grapes this fine, the winemaking can take a back seat allowing the vineyard to speak with a clear pure voice. Our 2022 Meteor has the elegance and poise of a cool vintage despite the heat that preceded its harvest.
With these four wines you have the makings of a unique and triumphant dinner party - your guests will be toasting your impeccable taste!
Cheers and drink well,
